The first of four reports in the recent Emergent Summit has been posted on the emergent us blog. There is a positive momentum that is carrying Emergent into the next 5-10 years of its missional journey, generative friendships, and theological reflection. This first report announces that Emergent has named Tony Jones as the first "National Director."
Tony has played a major role in the shaping of Emergent, through his tireless efforts through the years and he brings the same passion and commitment to this formalized role. I hope that it is one that will enable him to lead the many people who seek to be involved, in the expansive conversation, in a manner that is helpful to the mission and ethic of emergent.
I am excited about the possibilities that arise as organisms become a bit more structured without losing their fluidity. and i applaud the willingness of the Emergent coordinating group to navigate this tension filled space of "both/and." Being both a conversation and responsible for the impact of those conversations, does require some structure in order to be good stewards of the momentum and magnitude of the growing conversation. While it is often easier to live in the "either/or" mentality of life, it is in making a choice that energy and resources are focused and honed.
I think Emergent is at this juncture and pray for all those involved. I am grateful for the risks taken thus far and imagine the road ahead is filled with many more. I imagine there will be detractors, and i am thankful that they are welcomed into the conversation as well (see doug pagitt's comment on the ec blog post- thanks doug;) for it is in the context of relationship and conversations that we learn, grow and change...

Emergent Appoints Tony Jones As First National Director
Minneapolis, MN. June 8, 2005 – Emergent today announced the appointment of Tony Jones as its first National Director. The group, which describes itself as “a growing, generative friendship,” has been increasing in both size and positive influence within the North American Church and, increasingly, the Church around the globe. Jones said, “I wholeheartedly believe Emergent will play a catalytic and generative role in the life of the American Church for years to come.” The appointment of Jones is recognition of the need for coordination of the vast volunteer efforts of Emergent. Jones's role will become progressively more full-time. He will commence this role October 1, 2005 and move completely into the role by June 1, 2006. (read more)
